The decentralised energy platform

Sharing energy locally helps solve grid congestion

An energy community allocates the grid capacity in an area smartly. That lets developers build, businesses connect and residents go sustainable at an affordable cost. The groupp.energy platform takes care of the rest.

The benefits of an energy community

Affordable

Locally generated energy is shared within the community, with no margin on the kWh. The benefit stays in the area.

Available

By using the grid smartly together, room opens up for new connections, homes and businesses.

Fair

Members share energy, costs and the grid. Everything is arranged transparently, so everyone can see where their money goes.

The groupp.energy approach

In the Netherlands, grid congestion means long waiting lists for new connections. The grid seems full, yet locally there is plenty of room to work together more smartly. With four building blocks, an area with grid congestion becomes an area where you can build, connect and go sustainable again.

Energy community

Residents and businesses organise their energy together. They share locally generated electricity, use collective flexibility, steer their equipment smartly and keep costs fair.

Grid capacity cap

An area gets one agreed maximum of grid capacity for all electricity connections involved, instead of a place in the queue for each connection.

Capacity responsibility

The area has to stay within the cap. That responsibility lies with the party that signs the contract with the grid operator. In our solution, that is the energy community itself.

Local System Operator

The LSO monitors, steers and invoices the contracted capacity on behalf of the energy community, so the capacity cap is never exceeded. Groupp.energy fulfils this role in cooperation with the grid operator.

One method for every area

Every energy community goes through the same steps and gets the same services. The order can differ per type of area. In an existing area, you start by sharing and supplying energy. In new developments, we first apply for a capacity cap, because that is the condition for being able to build. Sharing and supplying energy follows after that.

  1. 1

    Explore With partners

Using our area analysis, we work with our partners to map out what an energy community can bring to the area.

  2. 2

    Organise groupp community

Residents and businesses join together in an energy community. In new developments, this happens before the first resident moves in.

  3. 3

    Share and supply energy

Members share locally generated energy and receive energy with no margin on the kWh.

  4. 4

    Capacity cap

As a community, you agree with the grid operator on a fixed maximum of grid capacity for the whole area.

  5. 5

    Self-supply Optional

Over time, the community supplies energy to its own members.

Who we work with

Energy communities grow where people already know each other. That’s why we work for organisations that know an area well or are responsible for it. They bring residents and businesses together; we provide the area analysis and the platform to organise the energy community.

The first groupps

These energy communities are currently being set up. Each in its own area, with the same foundation and the same services.

An existing energy cooperative and our living lab. In a residential neighbourhood and on a business park, we map how members’ generation and consumption overlap, and how that can be improved.
